First Encountered this crown being warn by the Troll King who plagued the village of Silvertown. It was found smashed into the head of the troll king who’s head had regenerated around it, making it part of his body.
The Knights of Goldenhawk Tower recovered Troll King Crown and instantly understood it was a powerful item indeed. Quagmire wanted to use the crown and thought of it as a gift. Dorian and Quill would have none of it, however, and forbid anyone to use it. Dorian kept it wrapped up and hidden away in his pack for the duration of the journey to Amn.
Later the group uncovered lore about the crown in the Secret Library of the Cowled Wizards. Here is what was discovered:
The crown’s true name is “The Crown of Fallen Heroes” or “The Crown of Shades”. It is an ancient artifact forged long ago by the Lich Mordoch of Thay. It has the power to trap men’s souls within the crown. The wearer of the crown can summon forth the souls of those trapped within to assume a shadowy form so that they may serve the master of the crown. Mordoch infused the crown with his evil and like a phylactery, the lich lord can use the souls trapped inside to restore his physical body should it be destroyed. Mordoch lost the crown when it was stolen by Aglarond adventurers. But it was lost to history when the adventurers went into the underdark to try and escape Mordoch’s wrath. There is a way to free those trapped within the crown but to do so requires the crown’s destruction. The ritual to free the souls of those trapped inside the crown is complicated and takes a week to complete. In essence it is done by duplicating the crown, transferring the souls to the duplicate, disenchanting the duplicate, and making whole the resulting residuum. The original crown can only be destroyed by someone who was trapped inside of it.
Dorian kept the crown but never used it. He wanted to destroy it but did not have the time since all efforts were being pursued to rescue Quagmire from Spellhold. Eventually, however, with the assault on Spellhold concluded, The Knights of Goldenhawk Tower performed a ritual to free the souls trapped inside the crown and ultimately destroy the crown.
